A procedure in which the doctor uses an endoscope, a flexible tube with a camera that is entered through the mouth to see the lining of your upper gastrointestinal tract ( esophagus, stomach and upper intestine i.e.duodenum) . The findings are visualised on a monitor attached to the scope. It helps in diagnosing and treating symptoms and conditions that affect the visualised areas. The procedure can also be used for obtaining biopsy sample( by passing an instrument through the scope to obtain a small piece of tissue ) for testing and also performing various therapeutic / interventional procedures to treat the conditions.

    • To see your upper GI tract clearly the doctor will ask you to come empty stomach ( not to eat or drink) upto 8hrs. prior to the procedure.
    • A local anaesthetic gargle / spray is applied to numb your throat to prevent you from gagging.
    • The endoscope does not interfere with your breathing.
    • The procedure most often takes upto 15-30 min.
    • The patient can resume normal diet once the swallowing returns to normal.
