Loss of liver function that occurs rapidly- in days or weeks- usually in a person who has no pre existing liver disease.

Most commonly caused by hepatitis virus or drugs such as acetoaminophen.

It is a life threatening condition which requires timely diagnosis and aggresive management in the hospital intensive care unit. Liver transplant is also recommended in selective cases.
